Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Her aunt worked in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage from one of the juries. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
